Hibernate

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Definition: Hibernate is another option for powering down your laptop. When you use Hibernate all data will be saved to the hard drive in a compressed form. Once you start up from Hibernate mode you will be able to work with the applications and documents you left open before putting the laptop into Hibernate.
Hibernate is best used to conserve laptop battery power when you will be away from the laptop for more than a few minutes. You can put your laptop into Hibernate overnight or when you will be away from it for a few hours.
Examples: Rather than shutting down my laptop each night, I use Hibernate to help conserve battery power and enable me to access my open files quicker in the morning.
