Guide Review - Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 with Connected Services
There are a variety of features in Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 with Connected Services that I found quite useful and which made using Streets and Trips 2008 a good tool for trip planning.
The first feature I really like is you can add shapes, scribbles and text boxes which can be used for notes and additional information that you need. To go with these elements there are Pushpins, which are an interesting feature that let you put your own symbols, names, text balloons which can include any info you want including links and you can use a pushpin to contain location which can be an address that gets stored with the pushpin.
The keyboard shortcuts can be used to move around the program so that you don't have to rely on a mouse which is quite useful while in your vehicle - pull over first. There is even an option to have voice and text instructions which can help you on your route.
If you are driving alone - use the program to plan your route and include alternate routes so that you know where you will be going. You can use it to get familiar with street names and other locations of interest in the vicinity of your destination.
The GPS Receiver is a useful addition as it helps you plan alternate routes and let you know where you happen to be if you end off your planned route. You can even change your route on the fly in case of an accident or other traffic impediment.
A feature worth mentioning is you can estimate fuel costs for trips so that you can determine whether driving will actually be the most cost effective method of travel.
The Connected Services portion of the program provides local gas prices and up-to-date traffic reports that are transmitted via FM signal. This service is not available in all areas yet but new areas are being added.
