How To Decide If Your Job is Suitable for Remote Work

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Before you request to begin working in a mobile or remote work environment, you must first determine if your particular job is suited to that method of work. This process is best carried out with input from your Supervisor and at least one other person who is currently working in a mobile or remote capacity.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 10 - 15 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Evaluate if your position involves a lot of independent effort.
  2. Decide if you do or do not require resources that are only in the office.
  3. Determine that no special equipment is required which cannot be purchased for a mobile or home office environment.
  4. Evaluate if you spend a lot of your time reading or writing.
  5. Ask if you will not require permission or approval on the job functions that you do.
  6. Make sure you can use company software on your home PC.
  7. Find out how to remotely access the company system.
  8. Evaluate if your home office or vehicle office will be suitable to work in on a regular basis.
  9. Determine if technical support will be available to you during regular hours and after hours.
  10. Provide examples of others who have worked in remote or mobile capacities in this position before.

Tips:

  1. Monitor yourself for a week before evaluating.
  2. Work on this with someone in a different position to get their input.
  3. Always be honest in your assessment - some jobs are not suitable.
