Can I use my cell phone overseas?

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Question: Can I use my cell phone overseas?
Answer: Mobile office professionals who wish to use their cell phones while working and traveling overseas will need:
  • A GSM (Global System for Mobile) tri-band phone. This phone is a compatible with international GSM networks.
  • SIM card which is inserted into your cell phone and allows you to use more than one phone number, such as your home phone number and a European number on the same phone.
  • Cell phone account with a provider that has a worldwide service package

Before committing to a service provider, check what each offers with their worldwide service packages. Some service providers offer free incoming calls or a set time of free outgoing calls while in certain countries.

If you won't travel overseas often, search for promotional offers and see what discounts you may be able to receive.
