Home Office Design for Telecommuters

Take time to design your home office

From , former About.com Guide

Have you ever stopped and wondered how efficient your home office is? The layout of your home office can affect your work and you may not even realize it.

Before you begin a telecommuting arrangement, it is a good time to plan your home office design. Watch your habits in the office and make note of what works and doesn't work in your workstation.

Although we have very little control over our workspace in an office, you can use the opportunity to decide what works and what is something to avoid in a home office.

When contemplating your home office design, there are some essential factors to keep in mind. These affect where you can locate your office, and how you arrange the office furniture and equipment.

  • What shape is the room you will use?
  • If not a separate room - how much space is available?
  • Where are electrical outlets located and how many are there?
  • Where are the telephone jacks? How many?
  • Where is the cable outlet? Cost of new outlet?
  • Location of heating and A/C outlets.
  • Type of lighting available, and what additional lighting you will need.
