Economical Home Offices Without Breaking the Bank

Create a Home Office on a Small Budget

From , former About.com Guide

Adequate and functional office space can be difficult for telecommuters to achieve in their home office when they work at home, but there are options besides spending a fortune to create and furnish your home office.

You may have a dedicated office or converted a space into your office area when you work at home. Others, not so lucky must share space, either in kitchens or other living areas.

For someone using a laptop on a regular basis to work at home and who does not require the use of other equipment to work at home, it may not be necessary to create a permanent home office. Down the road though, requirements can change and it is worth the initial expense and time to set up a more formal home office.

It does not have to be expensive to set up a functional home office to work at home. While putting an old door across sawhorses is not a wise or safe solution, there are economical and budget-friendly options.

Places where you can find furniture:

  • Second hand stores
  • Auctions
  • Office furniture resellers
  • Garage/yard sales
  • Checking the classified sections of newspapers may also turn up used office equipment.

At a garage sale years ago, I saw a vanity table that would have been ideal for a small work desk. It had a good-sized workspace and three drawers down one side. If you have limited space, this could be the ideal solution for less than $20 and some paint. You could place it in a bedroom or even a corner of a living room.

Don't be afraid to be creative and think outside the box when creating and furnishing your home office. When you work at home you can tailor your home office to your exact needs.
