Hotels can provide pleasant working environments

Mobile computing from a hotel can be as comfortable and productive as working anywhere else. Here are a few considerations:

  • Free Wi-Fi: Many hotels now offer wireless access for free or for a small daily fee, but not all of them do. When looking for a hotel to stay at, keep in mind that ones that host conventions or business meetings have the greatest likelihood of offering wireless service.

  • Wired Internet Access: You may also be able to get a wired connection to the Internet in your hotel room if you don't have a wireless network adapter. Some hotels also offer Internet workstations that can be rented or used freely; these are useful for guests who don't travel with their laptops or who need to print from the hotel's printers. Check with your hotel for availability of these options.

  • Power Outlets: Hotel rooms never seem to have enough outlets. Invest in a travel surge protector: most can be found for under $20 and offer multiple outlets in a portable, slim format. You'll also get needed protection from power surges.

  • Safety: When leaving your laptop at the hotel, either keep it in the hotel safe or use a cable lock to secure it to furniture in your room.
