How dangerous is it to use my cell phone while it is plugged in and charging? I've received emails from friends that warn how dangerous it is to use a cell phone while plugged into an electrical outlet. Should I be concerned?
From our own Guide to Urban Legends I found this - Don't Answer Cell Phone.... It sums up very nicely the fact that this situation isn't likely to occur in the normal course of events. The original news story that this stemmed from doesn't have complete details and there is the possibility that what occurred may have involved other factors such as poor wiring, incompatible or faulty phone parts. There are many variables that could be involved and not enough real detail is provided.
I personally have used my cell phone while it is plugged in and charging. I do make sure that my cell is plugged into a surge protector and never directly into an outlet. In all the years I've had a cell phone I haven't had any mishaps nor heard of any outside the email. Any other reports I found regarding cell phones exploding or causing fires have been from about four or five years ago.
I advise everyone to use common sense, make sure you are using compatible batteries and power supplies with your cell phone model and always be sure to use a surge protector - especially when traveling.
