Understanding what each style of laptop bag has to offer can make your decision regarding which laptop bag to purchase easier. See what each style has to offer and how they differ from each other. Whether you want to project a professional image or go for the casual look - there is a laptop bag style which will fit your needs.

Briefcase


Most mobile workers are familiar with this style of laptop bag. They are traditionally dark colours and look professional. Some companies now offer the option of choosing colours and patterns either to coordinate with other luggage or to reflect individuality of the mobile worker.

Characteristics:

  • May be top loading or full zippered opening or small fold over flap.
  • Inside is well padded and usually has one large compartment for the laptop.
  • Some have adjustable dividers to fit a variety of laptop sizes.
  • Has internal pockets or compartments for other media or peripherals.
  • Often have external pockets for tickets, maps or other papers in addition to file pockets that may expand.
  • Briefcase style laptop bags can either have a rigid construction (like a traditional briefcase) or be soft-sided.
  • Both designs have padded interiors to protect the laptop.

Wheeled or Roller Laptop Bags


Most common to mobile workers who frequent air and rail travel, these laptop laptop bags enable mobile workers to move quickly through an area and allow them to carry other luggage.

Characteristics:

  • Small-wheeled cart designed to hold a specific laptop bag.
  • Handle telescopes for ease of use.
  • Laptop bag itself can be a variety of styles.
  • It is either permanently attached to the cart or attached with secure locking devices.
  • Can be removed and carried by hand when necessary.

Messenger


This style of laptop bag is more casual in appearance.

Characteristics:

  • Full fold over flap opening.
  • Usually pockets on the outside flap.
  • Compartments under the flap.
  • One large pouch area inside.
  • Soft-sided.
  • Shoulder and hand straps.

Backpack


These are a sportier looking laptop bag and enable mobile workers to keep their hands free and move easily in crowded areas and/or for long distances. Ideal for those who work outdoors and may be exposed to the elements on a regular basis.

Characteristics:

  • Helps balance load when both shoulder straps are used
  • Some include waist and chest straps for added stability and load balance
  • Exterior pockets for mobile gadgets or paperwork
  • One large compartment for laptop and perhaps another smaller section for files.

NOTE:

Traditional school-style backpacks are not adequate for carrying mobile gear, as they don’t provide padding to protect the mobile gadgets.

Sleeves/Boots


As the name implies these look like a sleeve or boot for a laptop. These are either an accessory to one of the above laptop bags or used in a standalone capacity.

Characteristics:

  • Rigid protective case.
  • Has some padding.
  • May have a carrying strap or a shoulder strap which can be attached.
  • Fits laptop snugly and may have an additional pocket for files.
  • Normally sold paired with a particular style of laptop case and can be securely attached inside the laptop case.
  • They increase the protection and security of the laptop by adding another layer of padding.
  • Creates a suspension system to protect laptop from bouncing and jostling.
