Getting Your New Mobile Gear Ready for Use

From , former About.com Guide

If you are lucky enough to receive new mobile gear this holiday season, here are some tips to help you get the most from your mobile gear and ensure that you are using it safely.
  1. Most mobile gear does not come ready to run out of the box. The batteries will require time to be charged.
  2. Before you plug your mobile gear into an outlet, make sure you have a surge protector between your device and the wall outlet.
  3. While your device is charging - read the User Manual. Also read the Warranty information so you know exactly what is and isn’t covered.
  4. If you’ve read the User Manual and your device is still charging – do a quick search online for new applications that you might want to use on your device.
  5. Once charged - install any add-on software that shipped with your mobile device.
  6. Install any additional software that you have purchased or found free that you want to use or try.
  7. If your device has Wi-Fi; set it up to access your home network if you have one. You can also set up Bluetooth pairings when your laptop or other accessories.
  8. Test all your connections to make sure they are working.
  9. Make a list of any additional accessories you may want such as storage cards or cables.
  10. Enjoy your new mobile device and what it will enable you to do while on the road.
Additional Notes:

While it may be tempting to make “adjustments” to how your mobile device operates such as “cracking” or “hacking” settings; remember those actions can void your warranty and leave you with a device that no longer works.

If your mobile device is not going to allow you to work in the way that you want, then you might consider returning it or exchanging it for a device better suited to your needs. This is a wiser alternative than trying to alter how a device works.

The best way to get the mobile device you want and will use is to do your research to see what different models offer and which is best suited to you. Be sure to provide specifics if this will be a gift from someone else or purchase it on your own. This may not seem as special but just may ensure that you get the right mobile gear.
