How is Internet Access different in Europe?

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Question: How is Internet Access different in Europe?

Using the Internet while traveling in Europe provides new challenges and will involve more expenses for mobile professionals. Learn to prepare properly for your European business trips and plan for expenses that are both expected and unexpected.

Answer: Mobile professionals must be aware that when they access the Internet in Europe they will be charged for access on a per minute basis, even if using a local access number for their Internet access.

Part of your trip planning process should be to research what local access numbers your Internet provider provides for the locations you will be traveling and what the per minute charges will be. In some circumstances you may be able to pay for a specific block of time for access but don't plan on finding that available in all locations.

Internet cafes may provide a more economical alternative to using your own ISP while traveling in Europe.
