Don't Forget About Those Who Stay Onsite

Ensure that all workers onsite and off work together.

By Catherine Roseberry, About.com

When a mobile work program begins in a company, management can't forget about the employees who won't be working in a mobile environment. It may seem that all the focus and attention is put on the mobile workers, leaving those who stay onsite feeling left out.

Some employees will not become mobile workers for a variety of reasons:

  • The employee has no interest in mobile work
  • The employee is not qualified at this time for working remotely
  • Not a suitable match due to attitude or other reason that are not likely to change

For those who are not interested in becoming mobile workers, management should take the time to remind them that all employees are valued and important parts of the team. Assurance that their support is needed and that they in turn are supported, will go a long way to maintaining good will.

Individuals who may not qualify initially should be encouraged to continue their preparation for working remotely, if they are good potential candidates. This includes taking continuing education courses related to work and participating in mobile work training.

Explaining why these individuals are not qualified and how they can become qualified, will ease disappointment. It will also let the employee know that mobile work options are still possible at a later date.

Most companies will have employees who are just not suitable and may take issue with that fact. Care must be taken with any discussions so that the issue does not become too personal. Prior evaluations and discussions of work habits would be an appropriate method.

Using tact and honesty to deal with all employees who remain onsite, is a big part of ensuring the success of any mobile work program. Remember, mobile workers can't succeed without the support and assistance of their onsite co-workers.
