Network Interface Card (NIC)

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Definition: A network interface card is used by PC systems to connect to either an Ethernet network or a wireless network. Most desktop systems come with NICs already installed and you may need to purchase a router to create a home office network. Your corporate office desktop uses a network interface card to share resources and connect to your corporate network. NICs are not used in laptops or PDAs.
