How To Lose a Remote Work Arrangement

A Light-Hearted Look at Work Life

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Despite the fact that you get to work from home or just about anywhere around the world, who needs it, right? If you are deadset on ending your remote work arrangement and just don't have the heart to tell your boss that you want to go back to the cubicle life, then here are some ways to end your remote work arrangement and quite possibly your job.

Don't do any work.
The simplest and easiest solution. It will require a great deal of determination and effort to keep yourself from working.

Keep the television and radio really loud.
This is very useful especially when on conference calls.

Never answer the phone.
Why pick it up when you know it's going to be your boss asking where the latest project or report is.

Make sure never to return any calls or emails.
You know what you are (or not) doing, so why do you have to keep explaining this to your co-workers, boss and clients.

Spend every day shopping.
Shopping during the daytime is great. There are fewer people out and you don't have to wait in long line-ups at the checkout.

Take the time to brush up on your favourite sport.
Ready to work on your golf swing or batting average? During the day is a great time as you won't have to wait as long and you can take as long as you like.

Go on holidays without telling anyone.
Feel like heading off to somewhere exotic? Off you go and why let anyone know? It's not like they are going to stop you, right?

Don't forget to send a "wish you here" postcard.
Pictures are worth a thousand words and you know that postcards can show others what a great place you are visiting.

Stay in 5 Star Hotels and Order Room Service
Of course you'll make sure that your company is the one paying for the room service and any additional amenities that you can find.

Blame others when your work isn't complete.
Pick someone else to take the flack and deal with the boss. Picking someone working onsite is best as they are more visible and quicker for the boss to find.

Remember: "my dog ate it" for projects that you didn't bother doing.
It worked in school so why not use it now?

Most importantly, don't turn your computer on.
This is another easy step and while it might be tempting, just remember that you can't work if your computer isn't turned on.

Tips For Dealing With Your Boss:

  • Buy your boss a gift while shopping.
  • Remember to say hello to your boss when you bump into them.
