Using Your Own ISP When Traveling

Why pay extra for Internet Access?

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Why rely on an Internet service provider you aren't used to and don't know anything about? You can use your own ISP to access the Internet when staying in hotels on business trips.

When looking at companies for your home Internet service, investigate to learn which companies offer roaming access. Many companies now provide roaming access numbers for dial up to their high speed customers. While you may have a limited number of hours per month, if you are only using the Internet to send and receive e-mail, this can be a cost-saving solution.

Additional benefits are:

  • You are familiar with the ISP and how they operate.
  • Configuring your laptop or mobile device can be done before you leave.
  • You have tech support available through your own ISP.
  • You can keep a list of available dial up numbers for each location you will be traveling to.

While some may argue that dial up is slower than the high speed access offered by hotels, you must also take into consideration that you are sharing that access with other users in the hotel and that may affect your connection.

Some hotels have restrictions on their Internet access which allow you to receive e-mail, but you are not able to send e-mail. If you use your own ISP, you still have that ability. It is no different than using your home computer to access the Internet.

Just remember to pack an extension phone cord before you leave so that you aren't tied to an inconvenient location in your hotel room.
