Can I use my modem overseas?

From Catherine Roseberry, for About.com

Question: Can I use my modem overseas?

Answer: You will have to find out if the country you are traveling to has a digital or analog phone system. Connecting your laptop directly to a digital system can destroy it. Check the telephone in your room to see if it has a data port on it. If so, you can connect your modem to that line (internal filter). If there is no data port you will need a digital interface.

You will require a line filter if traveling in Germany or Austria as they have something known as tax impulsing. It's a deliberate line noise - high frequency/high pulse signal.

You may also have to adjust your modem to recognize the dial tone for the country you are in. Check your modem manual or online support before you leave to be sure you can correctly make this change.
