Laptop Travel Tips

Saturday May 13, 2006
You are responsible for ensuring that your laptop is ready to work in any location, and that you are using your laptop safely while on the road. It is important to remember that it is not only the data on your laptop that is at risk of harm - but corporate data may be accessed as well. Stay on track, connect wisely and safely.

  • Changing Date and Time Zone on Your Laptop
Changing the date and time on your laptop is an easy process and for most mobile workers, it's an important step to take while traveling. Knowing what the correct date and time is for where you are working will ensure that you don't miss meetings and stay organized.
  • Disable Ad Hoc Connections on Your Laptop
Protect yourself while traveling and make it harder for you and your laptop to become a target. Ensure that you are using legitimate and secure Access Points while on the road.
  • Connect to a Hotel's Wireless Network Service
Be sure your wireless network card is turned on, either using the switch on your laptop or activating the software program itself. You must also ensure that you are running a firewall and anti virus program on your laptop. While some wireless Internet access providers do incorporate a firewall program into their service you are still much safer with your own program running.
